Shirley J. Brooks, 78, of Economy, passed away Sunday morning, April 2, 2017, at her residence.Born May 21, 1938, in New Castle, she was a daughter of the late Clyde O. and Mary K. Williams. She was united in marriage to Robert W. Brooks on July 17, 1954. At the time, the family said it would not last, but they spent over 62 years together, proving them wrong. Shirley was an accomplished and talented artist with her favorite mediums being toll painting and water colors. Anyone who visited her home would see many examples of her artwork. Those who knew Shirley would attest that she was outspoken and forward thinking, but also kind and compassionate. She was well-loved and respected by many. Her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. As their hero, she defended and protected them always.A member of the New Castle Harley-Davidson West Penn H.O.G. Chapter, Shirley enjoyed riding and participating in the club’s many events. She was also a past chairwoman of the Economy Women’s Club’s welfare committee, which provides gift baskets at the holidays to needy families in addition to other service projects. A member of the Foxy Eight Card Club, Shirley was also a former cub scout den mother.She will be sadly missed by her husband, Bob; two sons, Robert O. Brooks of Brighton Township and Shawn M. Brooks of Economy; two grandchildren, Robert J. (Stephanie) Brooks and Shannon T. Brooks and two great-grandchildren, Delaney Marie Brooks and Levi J. Brooks, along with numerous nieces and nephews and a motherlode of friends.In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by a sister, Marion, and a daughter-in-law, Lisa Brooks.Memorial services and burial will take place at a future date with her extremely good friend, Rev. Jill MacGregor, officiating.
