Barbara Selinscak, 99, of Monaca, passed away October 18, 2012, after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Salinshick of Monaca, who emigrated from Croatia in 1918, and worked in the area steel mills and brick yards until he could save the money needed to bring his thirteen-year-old daughter to America in 1926.
Barbie found her American family when she went to live with Dan and Sue Romisher, a childless couple in Monaca. Her life revolved around her Catholic faith and her small hair salon. She styled hair in the era of pin curls; each carefully bobby-pinned in place until dry. A petite, trim figure, she was immaculately groomed at all times.
Barbie, a much admired half-sister to her father?s second family, is survived by Paul Salinschick Jr. and his wife, Patti, of Aliquippa; Frances Baser and her husband, Ken, of Loveland, CO; Sylvia Johnson and her husband, Kenneth, of Madison, GA and Janice Kolatac and her husband, Robert, of West Milford, NJ. Preceding her in death in addition to her father and the Romishers, was her half-sister, Susanne Baden, the wife of Roy ?Gus? Baden of Monaca who survives.
During her decades-long residence at the Monacatootha Apartments in Monaca, she was well attended to by loving friends, including Helen Werthman, Judy Calvin (who was like a daughter to her), and her next door neighbor, Frances Garman.
Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, where parting prayers will be offered Monday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Monaca.
Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Providence Health Care Center for the kindness they extended to Barbie.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made in Barbie?s memory to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1409 Pennsylvania Avenue, Monaca, PA 15061.
