Calvin L. ?Cal? Fath, 95, of Monaca, passed away Saturday morning, August 3, 2013, at Beaver Elder Care, Aliquippa, where he had resided for the past couple days.
Born August 19, 1917, in Center Twp., he was the last surviving child of the late Abraham L. and Mary (Summerville) Fath. Cal would have celebrated his 96th birthday in two weeks.
He was a graduate of Monaca High School, Class of 1936, and was first employed as an acetylene burner operator. A World War II veteran, Calvin entered the U. S. Army on August 13, 1943 and served with Company A, 873rd Engineer Aviation Battalion as a construction foreman. He participated in the following battles and campaigns: Southern Philippines, Ryukyus and New Guinea. Honorably discharged on Dec 21, 1946, as a staff sergeant, Cal was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal Bronze Star.
Cal was retired from J & L Steel?s Aliquippa Works where he was employed as a scarfer with 40 years of service. He later worked for Mecklem Hardware, Monaca.
Cal was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Monaca, where he served as an usher for 20 years. He was a charter, life and the oldest member of the Beaver Valley Sportsman?s Club which he helped to erect. He was also a life member of Monaca American Legion Post #580, Monaca Turners where he had previously been a member of their bowling league and the Monaca #4 Vol. Fire Dept.
In 1937, Cal married the former Frances Kalcevic who preceded him in death.In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred (Pauline) Fath, Dave (Mildred) Fath and Robert Fath; two sisters, Catherine (John) Goss and Mary Jane Harcher; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ann and Ed Rowan, Mary and John Fetchin, Margaret and John Kalcevic and parents-in-law; John and Mary Kalcevic.
He leaves a sister-in-law, Evelyn Fath and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and his caregivers, Edward and Ann Rowan and Mickey and Ilene Rowan.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to call on Monday, August 5th, at the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. when parting prayers will be offered. A mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Monaca. Rev. Father Michael Ruffalo, pastor, will be the celebrant.
Interment will follow in the parish cemetery with full military honors at 11:45 a.m. by the Beaver County Special Unit.
The family wishes to extend a warm thank you to the staff of Elmcroft Senior Living, Chippewa, Gateway Hospice and Beaver Elder Care, Aliquippa.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that those wishing to make a memorial gift, please direct their gifts to either, St. John the Baptist Catholic School, 15th St. and Virginia Ave., Monaca, PA 15061, or Monaca #4 Vol. Fire Dept., 913 Taylor Ave., Monaca, PA 15061.
