David C. Reese, 86 of Monaca was reunited with his beloved late wife, Luella Athena Reese on July 5, 2013.
Born Oct 31,1926 in Monaca, he was a son of the late George and Sabrina (Forse) Reese.
At the age of 17, Dave enlisted in the U S Navy during World War II and proudly served as a sailor aboard the U S S Yorktown C.V.10. He was honorably discharged in May of 1946 after being awarded the following medals: Asiatic and Pacific Medal 6 Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Medal 1 Star, Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon 1 Star, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Medal , Japanese Occupation Medal and the Victory Medal. After returning home, Dave soon found work at St Joe Mineral in Potter Twp where he was part of the bricklayer gang and from where he later retired as a general maintenance foreman.
Dave was united in marriage to the former Luella Athena ?Tootie? Tavernaris on Jan. 8, 1947. Luella preceded him in death on Jan 19, 2010.
Dave was actively involved in the community in numerous capacities for which he was inducted into the Monaca Hall of Fame in 1990. Those community activities included: member of Monaca Little League Organization in 1957 as umpire and coach; player agent for 16 years; director of the first minor league teams; president of Monaca Little League for 12 years, past-president of the Quarterback Club from 1961 to 1974; past prom committee from 1965 to 1972; Monaca School Board from 1968 to 1971; mayor?s advisory committee; free food program; Monaca recycling task force and a volunteer for the Maple Sugar Festival; He masonic affiliations included the Monaca Center Lodge #791 F .& A.M.; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and the Consistory Legion of Honor, both in New Castle; Eureka Royal Arch Chapter 167 in Rochester; Beaver Valley Council No. 54 and Beaver Valley Commandary No. 84. He was also a member of the Monaca American Legion Post #580, Monaca Coronet Band Room and the N.R.A. An enjoyable pastime for Dave was spending time with Elmer Gillin and his buddies at the Flying Finn Campground in E. Palestine, OH.
In addition to being predeceased by his parents and wife, Dave was the last of eight children: Charles (Lu) Reese, Margaret (Clyde) Parson, Gwendolyn Docktor, George (Ann) Reese, Blanche (Harold) Eaton, Mary (David) Weigle and William L. (Emily) Reese and a sister in law, Lois ?Dickie? Swager.
He leaves four sons: David A Reese and his wife, Diane of Industry, Daniel P. Reese and his wife, Cathy of New Sewickley Twp., Dennis C.Reese and his wife, Anita of New Brighton and Dale E. Reese and his wife, Pam of Industry. His grandchildren: David S. Reese, Christina (Jeremy) Paulovich, Diane (Joe) Cummings, Jesse A. Reese and Matthew T. Reese. Two great grandchildren, Gavin D. Reese and Shayla M. Reese. Two step grandchildren: Heather Vono and Jenny Vono. A brother in law, Marion ?Pete? Tavernaris and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Monday, July 8th from 2-4 and 6-9 pm in the Simpon Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, where services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m.. Interment will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park.
