Doris J. Karr, 88, of Monaca, passed away Friday morning, October 16, 2015, at her residence.Born December 18, 1926, in Monaca, she was the last surviving child of George and Marie (Witterman) Sickles. Following high school graduation Doris started working at L & M Market in Monaca. She met and was united in marriage to James J. Karr. In the late 1960’s the couple moved to California where Doris found employment at Walter E. Heller & Company They returned to the family homestead in Monaca after spending 20 years on the west coast. Doris then worked in the kitchen at the Polish National Alliance in Monaca for a number of years. Not one to be idle, she delivered Meals on Wheels on Mondays and volunteered at the coffee shop in the Medical Center of Beaver County on Thursdays.A faithful parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Doris was also active in the Catholic Daughters of America and Christian Mothers. Doris loved working word puzzles and was known to purchase up to 20 books at a time. In the summer she and her sister, Harriet ‘Babe’, spent many hours on the front porch of their Atlantic Avenue home talking to neighbors and friends passing by. Doris was also a ‘fan fanatic’ of the Pittsburgh Pirates.Surviving are nieces and nephews, Suellen (John) Ulicny, Jody Russell and Joni Ulicny all of Monaca, who were her caretakers for the past two years, Joan Grimm in Arizona, Jack (Jean) Bradford, and George Bradford, all of Monaca, Janice (Daniel) Coratto, of Brighton Township, John (Bonnie) Lane, in Arizona, Bonnie Thompson in Indiana, Marla Lane of Beaver, Mikal Palmer of Robinson Township, Robert (Linda) Lane, of Harmony Township and Linda (Jimmie) Goodland, of Ellwood City. She also leaves numerous neighbors and friends, especially, Richard, Donna and Robert Musgrave and Mary Nolan.In addition to her parents Doris was preceded in death by her husband, James, on December 26, 2003; six sisters, Anna Mae Sickles, Helen Shanor, Ila Jean Glass, June Lane, Harriet ‘Babe’ Sickles and Elizabeth ‘Betts’ Lepley; three brothers, James Gormley Sickles, Robert ‘Mike’ Sickles and Leonard Sickles who died in childhood; a nephew, Paul Shanor and a niece, Barbie Jo Sickles.Friends will be received Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca, where parting prayers will be offered Monday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Monaca.Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.The family suggests memorial contributions may be made, if desired, to the Beaver County Humane Society, 3394 Brodhead Road, Center Township, PA 15001.To share online condolences, get directions and other information, please visit simpsonfuneralhome.com.
