A man of honor, integrity, and unwavering strength, George Glass made a significant impact in the lives of those around him. He was a hardworking man who wasn’t concerned with building wealth, but he focused his time and attention on fully embracing each and every day he was given. George was thrilled to witness his family tree blossom to include grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild who made him so very proud. A lifelong resident in the community he loved, he was the sort of person whom everyone seemed to know. Deeply loved, George will be forever missed.It was great to be an American during the 1920s. Innovation was taking us places we had never been, which transformed the way we lived our everyday lives. Among the advancements were radios, refrigerators and washing machines, and motion pictures in both color and sound. Jazz music was all the rage while Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth made baseball America’s favorite pastime. Amidst this eventful time was an exciting time in the lives of a young couple from Monaca, Pennsylvania, as they were pleased to announce the birth of their healthy baby boy on April 18, 1925. George E. was one of four sons born to his parents, Harry and Mary (Trombulak) Glass, and he was raised in the family home alongside his brothers, Harry and Raymond. Sadly, his third brother died at birth. He was a student at local schools and played baseball, later he served as a coach for Monaca Little League Baseball.As WWII gripped more and more of Europe during the early 1940s, America remained neutral. However, with the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, we were left with no choice but to engage in the fight for the freedoms that we still enjoy today. Joining countless other young servicemen and women, George answered the call to serve during this time of great need. He became part of the United States Navy, serving in the Naval Construction Battalion with the 112th Fighting Seebees. They built an Air Force base on Tinian in the Mariana Islands in 1945, which was the largest Air Force base at the time. The B-29 Bombers that carried the first atomic bomb flew out of Tinian. For the rest of his life George was so proud to have played a part in such an integral part in the success of WWII as well as in our nation’s history.Once again a civilian, George retuned home and secured employment with the United States Postal Service. It was while working as a mail carrier that he met the woman with whom he would share the best years of his life. Her name was Marlene “Jean” Kallberg Frank, and she was a widow with three young children. With a desire to share the rest of their lives together, George and Jean became husband and wife on January 3, 1969. They settled in Monaca where they raised their blended family. Jean experienced several health issues, and George was always very attentive to her care. He was also very loving and fair when it came to his stepchildren.Through the years George was one to keep busy, and he was a man of many interests as well. He was a lifetime member of the Monaca VFW Post #4653, and together with his wife he was also an active member of the Beaver Valley Woodcarvers. A sports enthusiast, George liked golfing, loved baseball in general and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan, and he also enjoyed watching war movies as well as horror movies, which he called “weirdo movies.” For years Fridays were reserved for trips to Rogers, Ohio, to browse the giant flea market. George and Jean loved camping at Guilford Lake, Ohio, for the entire summer for many years. They also camped at Flying Finn Campground in Ohio and enjoyed woodcarving together, too.A good-natured, fun-loving, and kindhearted man, George Glass lived his life with others in mind. He was selfless and attentive when it came to his family, and his devotion to his loved ones was unmatched. George was a man of great character and strength who took nothing for granted. He leaves behind a priceless collection of memories that his loved ones will forever cherish.George E. Glass, of Monaca, died on Monday, December 1, 2014, at Masonic Village of Sewickley. George’s family includes his three sons, Gary Glass (Marilyn Snedeker) of New Brighton, John Glass (Margie Ware) of Monaca, and Ron (Dawn) Glass in Florida; stepson, Terry (Becky) Frank of North Sewickley Twp.; daughter, Darla Beckman in Florida; two stepdaughters, Karla (Ron) Besong of Fair Oaks and Lynn Nyoh of Monaca; grandchildren, Ron, Joshua, Branden, Elizabeth, Diane (Nate) Vula, John Glass, Jr., Chris (Andrea) Glass, Crystal Glass and Harry Lily; four step-grandchildren, Bob Frank, Amanda (Paul) Lomagro, Joe (Courtney) Nyoh and Leah Nyoh; ten great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; and brother, Harry Glass of Troy, PA. In addition to his parents George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marlene and a brother, Raymond, both in 2011; and a brother who died at birth. Friends will be received Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca, where funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. Rev. Dr. Timothy Reichard, Director of Pastoral Care at the Masonic Village, will officiate. Interment will follow in Beaver Cemetery. Full military honors will be provided by the Beaver County Special Unit at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
