John G. Kalidonis, 86, of Monaca, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 24, 2012 at Beaver Elder Care, Aliquippa, with his family by his side.
Born June 28, 1925, in Aliquippa, a son of the late George J. and Helen (Walker) Kalidonis, John was raised in West Aliquippa and was a graduate of Aliquippa High School. He served in the U S Navy from 1942 until 1946 during World War II as a radioman 2nd class aboard the USS LST 240 and USS Randolph. After returning home, John was a restaurateur for 18 years operating the Lincoln Restaurant in Rochester and later the Ninth Street Restaurant in Monaca. He then gained employment as a clerk with the U S Post Office in Monaca from where he retired.
John was a member of Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, Aliquippa; a life member of the Monaca American Legion Post #580; a member of Aliquippa Senior Citizens of Greek Community and a former member of the Monaca Bandroom and past commodore and past member of the Beaver Valley Yacht Club.
John and the former Pauline ‘Polly’ Maragos were united in marriage on Feb 9, 1947 in Polly’s hometown of E. Pittsburgh. The couple had made their home in Monaca since 1951.
Polly passed away Jan 19, 2006. John was also preceded in death by a sister, Kaleopy Poutos and her husband, Bill; two brothers-in-law, Alfus ‘Al’ Matko and Steve Harvan.
He leaves a daughter, Catherine ‘Katina’ Tutwiler and her husband, James, of Big Beaver and a son, George J. Kalidonis and his wife, Debbie, of Fort Pierce. FL. Papou of five grandchildren, Sheri Lyn (Don) Horinka, Brian Tutwiler, Anna Marie Emler, Kevin Kalidonis and Kelly Kalidonis; nine great-grandchildren, Kayla and Ron Hall, Nick and Joe Horinka, Stevie Rae Tutwiler, Cody Kassel, Thomas Tutwiler, Brooke and Zachary Emler; a great great-granddaughter, Payton Lyn; a brother, Gregory ‘Yuoy’ (Marie) Kalidonis of Aliquippa; two sisters. Stella Harvan of Hopewell Twp. and Josephine Matko of Center Twp., and a close friend, Angelica Mitikas.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 8:30 p.m. in the SIMPSON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca.
Additional viewing will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. in Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, 2111 Davidson Ave., Aliquippa with Rev. Father Christopher Bender, officiating.
Trisagion (blessing service) will be held on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Aliquippa with full military honors at 11:45 a.m. provided by the Beaver County Special Unit.
