John Paul Basar, 95, of Monaca, passed away Friday afternoon, March 17, 2017, at Heritage Valley Beaver.Born March 24, 1921, he was the last survivor of eight children of the late George and Anna (Volovich) Basar. John was a lifelong resident and graduated from Monaca High School in 1939. He proudly served in the US Army Air Corps in the European Theater during World War II. A retired steelworker from Colonial Steel (Teledyne Vasco), he enjoyed woodworking, especially doing cabinetry work, in his leisure time. Playing baseball in his younger days spawned a love of the sport and he grew up following the Pittsburgh Pirates through good times and bad. A life member of the Monaca Veterans of Foreign Wars, John was also a former member of the Ambridge Croatian Club and was a regular at Chick’s Dutch Bar.He leaves to mourn his loss two daughters, Barbara Cooke and her husband, Kevin, of Patterson Township, and Jo Anne Schiefer and her husband, Gary, of Tiffin, Ohio; a grandson, Alex; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Anna (Sudar) Basar in 1992, and seven siblings, George, Nick, Katherine, Ann, Margaret, Joe and Frank.Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca, where parting prayers will be offered Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Center Township. Rev. Fr.
