Joseph N. ?Toby? Turbish, 87 a lifelong resident of Monaca passed away Friday afternoon, August 23, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospice at Heritage Valley.
Born Nov 1, 1925 , he was a son of the late George and Theresa Postich Turbish.
An accomplished athlete, Joe was a star football player while attending Monaca High School. After proudly serving in the U S Army during World War II, Joe returned to sports and was a much sought after pitcher. He played for several of the area fast pitch softball teams well until his 40s. He was also an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Joe retired as a construction worker from Laborer International Local 833 and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Monaca.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Martinkovich Turbish. Also by two sons and their wives: Kirk (Janet) Turbish and Mark (Judy) Turbish. His grandchildren: Kylee, Marisa, Mark, Tiffany, Shawna, Ryan and Kayla and a great grandson, Lukas. Several nieces and nephews including, Ron and Nick Plodinec, Christine Burgess, Michael Turbish, Judy Busco and Karen Fitzsimmons.
The last of his immediate family, Joe was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers: Barbara Plodinec, Georgette Curilovic, George ?Windy? Turbish and Steve ?Fats? Turbish.
Friends will be received Monday from 1-3 pm and 6-8 pm at the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca where prayers will be offered on Tuesday at 9:30 am followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 am in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Monaca. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial gifts be directed to organizations involved in cancer research.
