Josephine Bankowski, 91, of Monaca, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 26, 2011, in Friendship Ridge. where she resided for the past month.
Born March 7, 1920, in Elizabeth, NJ, she was the last surviving child of the late Martin and Katherine (Firlej) Phillips. Josephine was married to Walter ‘Shorty’ Bankowski, who preceded her in death on January 20, 2004. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Monaca and the Polish National Alliance, Monaca. During World War II, Josephine did her part to assist in the war effort by making airplane propellers at Curtis Wright in Beaver. She enjoyed crocheting, bingo and occasional trips to Mountaineer Park and the Meadows.
Josephine will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law, Mary Phillips; a special nephew and niece, John and Suellen Ulicny; a special niece, Susan Gum and her husband, Michael; nieces and nephews, Connie Rinker, Frank Phillips, Elizabeth Gentile and her husband, Vincent; Joseph Ulicny and his wife, Barbara; Daniel Phillips and his wife, Jocelyn; Betty Alford and her husband, Greg; Cathy Gatian and her husband, Dan, and Patty Barr; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews and her best friend, Opal Hall, of Salem, WV.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death on October 3, 2000, by her daughter, Kathleen Dishler. She was also preceded by her son-in-law, Michael Dishler; a sister, Sophie Ulicny; four brothers, Walter Phillips, Frank Phillips, Lewis Phillips and Stanley Phillips; three sisters-in-law, Pauline DeMacio, Anita Barr and Patricia Phillips; two brothers-in-law, Stanley Bankowski and John Bankowski, and a nephew, Robert Phillips.
Friends will be received today from 2 to 8 p.m. in the SIMPSON FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, (724-728-4000), where parting prayers will be offered Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Monaca. Rev. Father George Chortos, pastor, will be the celebrant.
Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
The family has suggested, in lieu of flowers, that contributions may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1409 Pennsylvania Avenue, Monaca, PA 15061.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of 3rd Main at Friendship Ridge for the compassionate care Josephine received during her stay.
