Joseph Frederick Swager, 84, of Center Township, entered Heaven?s gates, Sunday, February 3, 2013, while at Good Samaritan Hospice, Wexford, surrounded by his loving family.
Born November 18, 1928, Joe was a son of the late Frederick J. and Margaret Goss Swager. He was employed by Colonial Steel, Teledyne Vasco, Monaca, as a hammerman with 40 years of service. An outdoorsman, Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, but still found time to ?putz? in his garage. In his teenage years, he was a boxer and continued to exercise by jumping rope and punching the bag, well into his seventies. Joe was a member of the American Legion Post 580, the Rod and Gun Club and the Saxons, all in Monaca.
While serving the US Army with the 5th Trans Truck Company at Ft. Richardson, Alaska, he played football for one of the intramural teams for enlisted men at Elmendorf Army Air Corps Field in Anchorage.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his beloved son, Kurt, and his sister, Margaret, and brother, Michael.
He leaves his wife, Grace ?Betty?, of 59 years; daughters, JoEllen (Jay) Shatlock of Cranberry Township and Christine (Miles ?Buzz?) Mooney of Beaver; grandchildren, Jay (Mary) Shatlock in Louisiana, Jonathan (Colleen) Shatlock in Maryland, Jessica Shatlock and her fiancé, Bobby Hanna, of Ambridge and Jael and Jason Shatlock of Cranberry Township, Grace and Joe DeIuliis of Treesdale, Mary Beth and Dr. Robert Norkus of Sewickley, Thomas Patterson of Beaver Falls and Jane and Jim Maxwell of Wexford; 12 beloved great-grandchildren, Jaylon, Jadon, James, Justus, Sarah, Victoria, Elizabeth, Claire, Lily Grace, Mary Kate, Caroline and James; two sisters, Dorothy Wiley and Judy LaHue, both in Texas and brother, William, also in Texas.
The family wishes to thank our neighbor, Dave Grimm and our friend, Daneen Bigstaff, for all their support.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the SIMPSON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, 724-728-4000, where a service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Mr. Daniel Conville will officiate.
Interment will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park.
The family has suggested memorial contributions be made, if desired, to any veteran’s organization of their choice or Good Samaritan Hospice, 3500 Brooktree Rd # 320, Wexford, PA 15090.
