Leonard P. Benko, 68, of Conway, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at his home following an extended illness.
Born January 11, 1942, in Rochester, he was a son of Ann M. (Chorba) Benko of Monaca and the late Edward F. Benko. A graduate of Monaca High School, Class of 1959, Len later attended three years at Penn State University, Main Campus. He honorably served his country in the US Army during the Berlin Crisis. In 2003 Len retired as an engineer from Norfolk Southern Railroad, Conway Yards, following 38 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Conway, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. Len collected and ran model railroads, and had previously been a ham radio operator in his earlier years. His primary devotion was to his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his mother, he leaves his devoted wife of 43 years, Carole C (Paliotte) Benko; three children, Tom Benko of Conway, Lisa Hohman and her husband, Keith, of Economy and Christy Boyle of Harmony Twp.; four grandchildren, Zachary, Hayden, Joshua and Hannah; four siblings, Edward W. Benko of Monaca, Martin J. Benko of Leland NC, Christine Ann Benko Ritz of Houston TX and Frank M. Benko of Santa Cruz CA and his mother-in-law, Hannah Paliotte of New Sewickley Twp.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 1000 Third Avenue, Conway. Rev. Father John P. Fitzgerald will be the celebrant.
Committal services will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park with full military honors by the Beaver County Special Unit at 2:15 p.m.
