Mary A. Hodgekin, 93, a longtime Monaca resident, passed away Saturday morning, March 15, 2014 at Providence Care Center, Beaver Falls.Born May 30, 1920 in Coalton (Randolph Co.). W.V., she was a daughter of the late Ira Zane and Sicely (Hayes) Scott.Having a love of children, Mrs. Hodgekin gained employment with Easter Seals and later with the Head Start program. Mary’s dedication to the kids and these programs in Southwestern Pennsylvania as a foster grandparent lead to the receipt of numerous awards, plaques and citations for her many years of service, including recognition by President George H.W. Bush and the Senate of Pennsylvania.Mary leaves a daughter, Sandy Patton, in Texas and three grandchildren: Bryan Patton, Laura Burns and Clay Patton. She also leaves two nieces, Sheila Brown and Joyce Wilson, both of whom she considered as close as daughters.The last of ten children, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Rachel Scott White, Harold Scott, William Scott, Pearl Scott Geary, Elva Scott Christman, Beulah Scott Hagar, Herbert Scott, Ira Scott, Jr. and Harley Scott.A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the SIMPSON FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca (724-728-4000), with the Reverend Jeff Youell, Grane Hospice chaplain, officiating.
