Mary Ellen Buchanan

Mary Ellen Buchanan, 90, former longtime resident of Hopewell Township, Pennsylvania, was called Home on Thursday, August 3, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. A woman of strength, resilience, and unwavering kindness, she was known for her hard work, dedication and love for her family, friends and helping others.

Born and raised in Aliquippa, Mary Ellen was the daughter of the late Rebecca McElhose. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, Lester Ray Buchanan. Tragically she was preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter, Amy Jo Buchanan in 1993. Also proceeded in death by her siblings, Gladys Sovich, Betty Bender, Sam Huffman and dear friend Raymond Yanko.

She was a loving mother to her daughter, Deborah (John) Powers, with whom she resided the past few months in Jamestown, Pa and her son, Jerry (Maryann) Buchanan of Arizona. Mary Ellen was also a cherished sister to Erma Marcello and Dolores White and twin brothers, Sam and Stanley McElhose.

Mary Ellen left a lasting legacy at Aliquippa Hospital, where she retired from her role as Housekeeping Supervisor. She carried this same dedication into her retirement, always willing to lend a helping hand.

An ardent supporter of Pittsburgh sport teams, Mary Ellen was particularly fond of the Penquins.

She was a devoted member of Van Kirk Lutheran Church, Center Township and her unwavering faith was evident in her commitment to the church and the community, often helping with church bazaars and the Manna dinners at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Aliquippa.

She was an amazing woman who lived her life to the fullest and touched so many hearts.

Friends and family are respectfully invited to visit on Tuesday, August 8th from 3-7 p.m. at the SIMPSON FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca where services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with her pastor, Reverend Susan Irons, officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Aliquippa.
