Robert L. Smith, 84, of Monaca, passed away Saturday evening, March 31, 2012. His passing occurred in his home which he had totally refurbished and was a place where he found contentment.
Born June 8, 1927, in Ellwood City, he was raised by his adopted parents, the late Harry P. and Carrie Etta (Bowser) Smith. Bob was 18 when he entered the U. S. Army during World War II and served with the Army’s 90th Infantry Battalion. He then spent 15 years with the National Guard as a specialist 4th class. For the majority of his working career, Bob was employed with Babcock & Wilcox Steel (both the Beaver Falls and Ambridge mills) as a shipper and loader, retiring in 1989 following 34 years of employment. He also operated a plaster contracting business from 1947 until 1967. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monaca.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded by his beloved wife, Shirley Ann (Davis) Smith, on Jan 25, 2010. He was also preceded by a brother, Leroy Morse, and a sister, Della Parks Reese.
He leaves his children: Melanie Smith and Helen Irene Keller and her husband, Kevin all of Monaca; Carole Frohe and her husband, Michael of Kannapolis, N.C.; Judi Welsh and her husband, Lew and Bobbi Lee Lutz and her husband, Jim, all of Ellwood City and Debi Barton and her husband, Gary of Conyers, GA. His grandchildren: Andrew Robert Golletti, Seth Alexander and Kaitlyn Rose Keller; Kenneth (Michelle) Frohe, Bradley Frohe, Scott (Misty) Cortez, William (Rhonda) Stevenson, Shannon Barton and Sgt. Gary (Gina) Barton, Jr. His great grandchildren: Amanda Frohe, Robert and Thomas Stevenson, Abagaile and Tyler Croteau, Cooper and MaKenzie Barton. A special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack Davis and his wife, Jane of Center Twp.; special family friends, May Ruckman of Monaca and Jean Jenkins and Sandi Tibbs, both of Severna Park, MD.
Friends will be received Tuesday, April 3, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the SIMPSON FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, (724-728-4000). Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Monaca, 1301 Indiana Avenue. Everyone is requested to meet at the church. His pastor, Rev. Beth Wierman, will officiate.
Interment will follow in Beaver Cemetery at 1:30 p.m .with full military honors provided by the Beaver County Special Unit.
The family would to thank Judy Butera for the special care she gave Bob during the past several months while he was confined at home.
