Robert Thomas (Pork) Nichol, 79, of Monaca, passed away May 1, 2011, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. His loving wife Sis (Juanita), his son, Bill and his daughter-in-law, Lynn were at his side when he passed.
Born on September 30, 1931, in Monaca, to Alexander Marshall and Marie Wilma (Mamie) Nichol, Pork was a faithful Christian, a loving husband and a devoted father. He graduated from Monaca High School in 1949, where he played football and baseball and later attended Geneva College.
Pork was a US Army veteran and served 11 months in Korea during the war. Upon returning from the war, he worked at J&L Steel in Aliquippa for two years before joining Colonial Steel (which later became Teledyne VASCO) in 1952. With 34 years of service, he spent the last 21 years as the mill?s general superintendent.
Pork led an active and involved life. He was a member of the Monaca Sokol Softball Club during much of the 1960s. He was also a member of Monaca-Center Lodge #791 Free and Accepted Masons. He was a coach in Little League baseball in Center Twp. He was also a member of the Sarasota Bay Golf and Horseshoe Club in Sarasota, Florida. Pork was a long time member of North Branch Presbyterian Church in Center Twp. and in recent years, the Word of Life Church in Monaca with Pastor Carlton Vreen.
Pork?s passion was traveling with his wife and best friend, Sis. He retired at the age of 59 and they spent the last quarter of his life traveling around the country in their motor home (they went through three of them over the years). At the height of their travels, they would leave Monaca after Labor Day and return home right before Memorial Day. They always spent a lot of time in Texas, watching their grandchildren, Will and Marshall, grow up playing football and baseball. Pork and Sis made many lasting friendships from people across the United States and Canada over their 20 years of traveling. Three years ago, they sold their motor home and bought a second home in Bradenton, Florida where they spent five months each year.
Pork was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Mamie Nichol and a brother, James. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sis; as well as his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Lynn Nichol of Beaver and their dog, Clancy; his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Barb Nichol of Dallas, Texas and their two boys, Will and Marshall who were the love of his life. Pork is also survived by his brother, Thomas (Chick) Nichol, his wife, Julie, and their family from Monaca; as well as a sister-in-law, Dorothy, and her children.
Friends will be received Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral and Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca (724-728-4000). A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Monacrest First Methodist Church, 995 Elmira Avenue, Monaca. Pastor Carlton Vreen of the Word of Life Church, will officiate. A luncheon will be served following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Word of Life Church, PO Box 37, Monaca, PA 15061.
Pork?s family would like to praise the doctors and nurses from Heritage Valley Beaver who lovingly cared for Pork in the last weeks of his life.
