Samuel R. Brown, Sr., 89, of Sewickley, formerly of Beaver, Independence Twp., Greene Twp. and Monaca, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Masonic Village at Sewickley into the loving arms of his wife of 69 years, Betty Jane Christner Brown, who preceded him in death on September 20, 2011.
Born January 7, 1923, in Beaver, he was a son of the late Charles and Margaret (Price) Brown. Along with his wife and parents Sam was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine George; three brothers, Chester, David and Silas Brown and a grandson, Jason Samuel Brown.
Samuel was a World War II veteran, serving in Patton?s 3rd Army in the 562nd Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion. He was active in the Battle of the Bulge and the invasion of Normandy. He was a German POW for a short time and was decorated with two bronze stars. Sam was master mason in the St. James Lodge #457 F&AM, Beaver and was awarded his 60 year pin in 2010. He also served on the Monaca School Board for a number of years and was a member of Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church in Hanover Twp. Sam was employed at Westinghouse in Vanport, retiring after 36 years of service.
He will be sadly missed by his son Samuel (Lori) Brown of Bridgeville; his daughter Jane (Roy) Roberts of Hanover Twp.; seven grandchildren, Tim Roberts of Hanover Twp., Jennifer (Greg) Miller of Beaver, Rebecca (Chad) Shirkey of Newark, OH, Kurt Roberts of Independence Twp., Josh Brown of New Brighton, Craig Roberts of Hanover Twp. and Max Kimmell of Bridgewater; four great-grandchildren, Cierra, Caitlyn and Cole Shirkey and Corvin Miller; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received Sunday from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca. Friends are also invited Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m. at Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church, 4128 Route 151, Aliquippa. His pastor, Rev. Kevin Neal, will officiate.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Full military honors will be provided by the Beaver County Special Unit at 10:30 a.m. at the cemetery.
Members of St. James Lodge #457 F& AM will conduct a Masonic service Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
