Shirley Esther Roix Hood, of Monaca, PA passed away surrounded by family on October 11, 2022 at the age of 91. Shirley was born April 11, 1931 in Presque Isle, ME and was the daughter of the late Myrtle and Forrest Roix. Shirley came from humble beginnings in Maine, but made Monaca her permanent home at the age of 15 when she moved in with her sister Betty, who was newly married. Shirley thrived at Monaca High School, making friendships that would last a lifetime, and graduating in 1949. She earned a nursing degree from the Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing in 1970. Shirley worked for 22 years as an R.N. at Rochester General Hospital and the Medical Center of Beaver County, where she led the IV therapy team.
Shirley was devoted to her family and friends and gathered them close with a warm and welcoming home, where she held regular parties and holidays full of laughter and where there was always a hot meal waiting. Shirley was dedicated to community engagement in Beaver County and was a natural leader in everything she did. She held leadership positions in the 4th Ward Monaca PTA, the Monaca Junior Women’s Club, the American Legion Post 580 Monacatootha Auxiliary, the 4th Ward Fireman’s Auxiliary, and the Monaca Sportsman’s Club Auxiliary. Shirley was also a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church and found much comfort in her faith in her later years.
Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, Charles Hood Jr. of Monaca, PA, sister Gloria Calhoun of New Brunswick, Canada, sister Darline McKenna of Cherry Hill, NJ, son Kerry Evans and partner Connie Miller of Center Twp, PA, son Greg Evans and wife Janice Evans of West Middlesex, PA, daughter Shelly Kincaid and husband Kris Kincaid of Center Twp, PA, stepdaughter Nancy Dannelly of St. Petersburg, FL, stepson Charles Hood III of Monaca, stepson David Hood of Monaca, granddaughter Megan Evans of Satellite Beach, FL, granddaughter Erin Evans of Mt. Lebanon, PA, granddaughter Brittany Ladakos and husband Demetrius Ladakos of Cranberry Twp, PA, grandson Kody Kincaid of Pittsburgh, PA, and three great-grandchildren Henry, Violet and Oliver Caldwell-Evans of Satellite Beach, FL, and many extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her siblings, Dean Roix, Dana Roix, Betty Ballish, and Joe Roix.
Friends will be received on Friday, October 14th at the SIMPSON FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca (724 728 4000) from 2-4 pm and 6 – 7:30 pm with a service to follow at 7:30 pm. with Reverend David Vaughn and Reverend James Sands, officiating.
