Sophie Balysh Bulva, 92, of Rochester, formerly of New Sewickley Township, died March 7, 2012, in Rochester Manor & Villa.
She was born July 10, 1919, on the New Sewickley farm of her parents, the late Constantine and Antonina Balysh, immigrants from Belarus.
For years, she was a nurse in the office of Dr. Melvern Mackall in Beaver. She also tended the home farm and cared for her aging parents. She was a lifelong member of the Holy Ghost Russian Orthodox Church of Ambridge. For decades she hosted traditional Russian Christmas Eve suppers in her home. She celebrated her 90th birthday on July 10, 2009, surrounded by many nieces and nephews.
On May 19, 1970, she married Anthony J. Bulva. He died April 13, 1991.
She also was preceded in death by brothers Peter and John Balysh and sisters Helen Jagerski, Olga Avey and Marie Simpson. She is survived by many nephews and nieces, among them locally Antoinette Wells of Bridgewater, Frank Jagerski Jr. of Center Township and Constance Miner of Wexford.
Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Service, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca where a Parastas service will be held at 7 pm . A blessiing service will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.at the funeral home, followed by an orthodox funeral service in the Holy Ghost Russian Orthodox Church, 210 Maplewood Ave.,Ambridge, at 10:30 a.m., with the Very Rev. Father William Evansky officiating. Interment will follow at Sylvania Hills Memorial Park.
