Walter M. Cronin, Sr., 92 of Monaca passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at The Haven at North Hills..Born on March 5, 1926, he was the son of the late Cornelius P. and Wilhemina “Minnie” (Depner)Cronin. As a young man, Walter served his country during WW II as a Veteran of the Merchant Marines. He also served the community of Monaca in numerous capacities over the years. His involvement included serving on the Monaca planning commission for over 40 years, a Monaca School Director for 12 years and was president of the board for 1 year. He served on the Monaca Library Board as their treasurer for 12 years, as a Justice of the Peace in Monaca for 10 years and a deputy sheriff for 8 years. Walter was also employed for a brief period as the Postmaster at the Monaca Post Office, and as a foreman for PennDot. He was a former member of the United Way, and the American Legion Post # 580 and was a warrant member in the Monaca-Center Lodge #791 F & AM, and a member of the New Castle Consistory. Walter was a devoted member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Monaca where he served as an usher for over 40 years and a longtime member of the church’s finance committee.He will be sadly missed by his wife, Irene S. (Fronko) Cronin whom he married on December 18, 1953 and recently celebrated their 65th anniversary, a son Walter M. (Lisa) Cronin, Jr. of Ben Avon and a daughter Coleen (William) Drischler of Glenshaw, four grandchildren; Olivia and Patrick Cronin, Brendan Drischler and Erin (Jordan) Tomb.The last of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Cornelius P.Jr., Dennis C. and Thomas Cronin and a sister, Theresa Gerace.Friends will be received on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca.
