William ‘Miles’ Krovchek, 96, of Center Township, our war hero and one of the greatest generation, was called home on our nation’s special day of veteran remembrance, November 11, 2014, at Heritage Valley Beaver.Born January 2, 1918, in Masontown, PA, he was a son of the late Marco ‘Mike’ and Sophia (Barber) Krovchek. Growing up in West Aliquippa, he was known as ‘Miley’. Miles proudly served in the US Army infantry with the Big Red One in the second battle wave during the invasion of Normandy on Omaha Beach, and served in the Battle of the Bulge in addition to traveling to Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Miles received many medals including eight bronze stars, a bronze arrowhead, the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the American Defense Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. Following his time in the service, Miles gained employment with LTV Steel, Aliquippa, as a furnace man in the wire mill before retiring.A personable, outgoing, kind, giving and thoughtful person, he loved people. With a wonderful outlook on life and a happy sense of humor, his motto was, “If you can’t something nice, then don’t say anything at all.” A talented artist he found his passion in painting landscapes and enjoyed woodworking. He once painted a portrait of President Jimmy Carter for which he received a personal, thank you note signed by the president himself. He and his wife, Myrna, found pleasure in camping and fishing at Pymatuning Lake. Miles had many friends and was considered at regular at Fire Mountain, where his army photo is prominently displayed. He will also be sadly missed by his Service Creek United Presbyterian Church family.He leaves to mourn his loss a sister-in-law, Barbara Krovchek of Aliquippa; a niece, Dawn Namadan of Beaver; a great-niece, Leslie (Bill) Hare of Beaver; a great-great-niece, Amelia Hare of State College, a great-great-nephew, Don Hare of Beaver and many dearly beloved nieces and nephews, along with many caring neighbors and friends.In addition to his parents Miles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Myrna (Bauer) Krovchek on September 25, 2013; two brothers, Nick and Waco; two sisters, Eva and Annie and a young sister, Ruby, who passed away at age 14, who had a special place in his heart.Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca, where funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. His pastor, Rev. William A.
